Stories of Impact: Serving Older Individuals in Peru

RestoringVision’s partnership with MSH Peru is implemented through Peru’s Pension65 program. This government program provides Peruvians ages 65 and older with food assistance and other social services – and with the support of RestoringVision, the eyeglasses they need to see clearly so that they can live their lives fully at every stage of life!

The people impacted by this program are living in extreme poverty and do not have the ability to access or afford eyeglasses.

Rosa is one recipient who recently experienced the power of clear vision because of RestoringVision’s programs. She said that before receiving a pair of glasses, she had trouble reading and signing documents as a community leader. As a user of the Pension65 Program in the Desaguadero district in the Puno Region, she attended a vision screening and received her own pair of reading glasses.

“Eyeglasses have changed my life,” Rosa said. “To participate in the different meetings of my community, I had difficulty signing documents, but now I can read and know what I am signing.”

Likewise, she pointed out in her language, the Aymara, “Muspatatwa, unjawxtwa ma lintikiwa unjayawxituxa,” which translates to, “I am surprised how a lens (eyeglasses) can give me the opportunity to see again.”

RestoringVision is committed to creating sustainable access to vision services and eyeglasses for people living in poverty across the globe – and we are committed to solving the global vision crisis.
