Testimonial: RestoringVision’s Impact in Jamaica Supports Young Girl to See at School

RestoringVision’s programs recently impacted a small rural village in the mountains of Jamaica, providing vision screenings and reading glasses for people in need.

“Standing in a line of schoolchildren waiting to have their vision tested was a small 8-year-old girl with braids who was sobbing uncontrollably. I asked why she was crying, and she said she could not see any of the letters on the chart while the other children could read the letters aloud. For the first time, she realized that she could not see at a distance, whereas her classmates could,” said Maxwell Cheng, OD, who served on this trip with his colleagues.

When the partner discovered the young girl needed eyeglasses to see clearly again, she put on her brand new pair and her face lit up with a huge smile.

“Moments like these remind us why we traveled many thousands of miles by plane and many hours on dirt roads to reach these rural villages without access to eye doctors,” Cheng said.
